WORLD SPREADSHEET DAY CELEBRATION

The IT Club of Mahe Co-operative College of Teacher Education, Mahe observed World Spreadsheet Day on 17 October 2025 at 10:00 AM with the aim of enhancing students’ skills in data handling, organisation, and digital documentation. The programme highlighted the significance of spreadsheet applications as essential tools in academic, professional, and administrative work.
The event began with an introductory address by the IT Club coordinator, who explained the history and purpose of World Spreadsheet Day, commemorating the release of VisiCalc—the first spreadsheet software. The coordinator emphasised the importance of spreadsheet literacy for future educators in planning lessons, maintaining records, analysing data, and preparing assessments.
A demonstration session was conducted to familiarise students with the fundamental as well as practical features of spreadsheet software. Topics covered included data entry, formatting techniques, basic formulas, functions, sorting and filtering data, chart creation, and shortcuts for improving efficiency. Students were also shown how spreadsheets can be used for classroom evaluation, attendance tracking, budgeting, and project planning.
A hands-on activity encouraged participants to practise the demonstrated operations. Students worked on sample datasets and applied formulas to solve tasks, enabling them to understand spreadsheet concepts more effectively. The interactive nature of the session fostered peer learning and confidence in using digital tools.
The programme concluded with a short reflection session where participants shared their learning experiences. Faculty members appreciated the initiative taken by the IT Club to promote digital competencies among students.
Overall, the World Spreadsheet Day celebration was informative, engaging, and highly beneficial, successfully increasing students’ proficiency in spreadsheet usage and digital data management.
