TEACHING ABOUT LOCAL HISTORY AND LANDMARK-FAZNA AFTHAB

A session on “Teaching About Local History and Landmarks” was organised by the IQAC of Mahe Co-operative College of Teacher Education (MCCTE) in association with GVHSS Koduvally on October 16, 2025, at 1:30 p.m.

The session aimed to highlight the importance of connecting students with their local heritage and understanding the educational significance of historical landmarks. The quote for the day, “Landmarks tell stories — history gives them a voice,” beautifully captured the essence of the theme, emphasizing how teachers can make history come alive by linking it with local contexts.

The resource person for the session was Ms. Fazna Afthab, a 2nd-year B.Ed. student of MCCTE, who effectively shared insights on integrating local history into classroom teaching. She discussed various methods to engage students in exploring their surroundings and understanding the stories behind landmarks that shape community identity.

The event was coordinated under the guidance of

Dr. Sreelatha K, Principal, MCCTE (General Coordinator),

Ms. Revathy M, Assistant Professor, MCCTE (IQAC Coordinator), and

Ms. Shajiha, Teacher, GVHSS Koduvally (Program Coordinator).

The session proved to be informative and inspiring, encouraging prospective teachers to adopt creative and localized approaches in history education. It reinforced the idea that teaching history is not merely about dates and events but about connecting learners with the living heritage around them
