BIRD WATCHING ACTIVITY

The Nature Club of MAHE Co-operative College of Teacher Education, Mahe conducted a Bird Watching Activity on 5th January 2025 at 11:00 AM with the objective of fostering environmental awareness, promoting appreciation for local biodiversity, and encouraging students to observe and connect with nature more closely.
The programme began with a brief introduction to bird watching as an educational and recreational activity. Students were informed about the importance of birds in maintaining ecological balance and the need to protect their habitats.
Under the guidance of faculty coordinators, participants explored the college surroundings and nearby natural areas to observe different species of birds. Students were introduced to:

Basic bird identification techniques

Observation skills such as noting size, colour patterns, calls, and behaviour

Importance of maintaining silence and patience while observing wildlife

Role of birds in pollination, seed dispersal, and pest control
During the activity, students spotted several common and seasonal bird species. The experience helped them understand the diversity of avian life thriving in local ecosystems. Many participants recorded observations through photographs, sketches, and short notes.

Students expressed great enthusiasm throughout the session and appreciated the opportunity to learn outside the classroom in a natural setting.
The programme concluded with a reflection session where students shared their observations and discussed the importance of biodiversity conservation.
The Bird Watching Activity was an enriching and insightful initiative, demonstrating the Nature Club’s commitment to promoting environmental literacy, appreciation of wildlife, and a deeper connection with nature among students.
