WORLD WETLANDS DAY AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

The Eco Club of MAHE Co-operative College of Teacher Education, Mahe conducted a World Wetlands Day Awareness Campaign on 3rd February 2025 at 10:30 AM with the objective of educating students about the ecological significance of wetlands and promoting conservation efforts to protect these vital ecosystems.
The programme began with a welcome address, followed by an introduction explaining the purpose of World Wetlands Day, observed globally to raise awareness about the importance of wetlands in sustaining biodiversity, regulating water cycles, preventing floods, and combating climate change.
A resource person delivered an insightful awareness session covering topics such as:

Types and functions of wetlands

Wetlands as habitats for diverse plant and animal species

Threats to wetlands including pollution, land conversion, and climate impacts

Importance of community participation in wetland conservation

Success stories of wetland restoration efforts around the world
The campaign featured several activities to engage students meaningfully:
1. Poster and Slogan Awareness Display
Students created creative posters and slogans highlighting themes such as:

“Save Wetlands, Save Life”

“Wetlands Are Earth’s Kidneys”

“Protect Our Wetlands for Future Generations”
2. Awareness March (Campus Walkthrough)
Participants carried placards and walked through the campus, spreading messages about wetland conservation and encouraging peers to learn more about local water bodies and their protection.
3. Interactive Discussion
Students shared their thoughts on the local wetlands they know, the threats these areas face, and strategies for sustainable conservation. The discussion encouraged active thinking and environmental responsibility.
The programme concluded with a pledge, where students committed to safeguarding wetlands, reducing pollution, conserving water, and promoting environmental awareness within their communities.
The World Wetlands Day Awareness Campaign was an impactful and educational initiative, reflecting the Eco Club’s dedication to building ecological consciousness, fostering student participation, and inspiring actions that contribute to the protection of natural ecosystems.
