WETLAND DAY OBSERVANCE

The Nature Club of MAHE Co-operative College of Teacher Education, Mahe observed Wetland Day on 26th February 2025 at 3:00 PM with the objective of raising awareness about the ecological importance of wetlands and encouraging students to contribute to their conservation.
The programme began with a welcome address, followed by an introductory session explaining the significance of World Wetlands Day and the vital role wetlands play in sustaining biodiversity, regulating water cycles, preventing floods, and supporting livelihoods.
A resource person delivered an informative session covering key themes such as:

Types of wetlands and their functions

Wetlands as habitats for diverse species of plants, birds, and aquatic life

Threats to wetlands due to pollution, land reclamation, and climate change

Importance of conserving local wetlands
-
Role of communities and youth in wetland protection
Students participated actively in discussions and asked insightful questions, showing keen interest in understanding environmental challenges.
As part of the observance, the Nature Club organized the following activities:
1. Awareness Posters and Slogan Display
Students created posters and slogans highlighting messages such as:

“Protect Wetlands, Protect Life”

“Wetlands Are Nature’s Kidneys”

“Save Our Wetlands for Future Generations”
2. Short Documentary Screening
A brief documentary showcasing the beauty, biodiversity, and environmental functions of wetlands was screened, enhancing students' understanding through visual learning.
3. Reflection and Discussion Session
Participants shared their thoughts on wetlands they have seen locally and discussed ways to contribute to conservation efforts such as reducing pollution and protecting water bodies.
The programme concluded with a message from the coordinators emphasizing that wetlands are irreplaceable ecosystems and must be protected through collective action and responsible environmental behaviour.
The Wetland Day Observance was an educational and meaningful initiative, reflecting the Nature Club’s commitment to fostering environmental awareness, ecological responsibility, and active participation in conservation efforts.
