INTERNATIONAL COMPOST AWARENESS WEEK PROGRAMME

The Eco Club of MAHE Co-operative College of Teacher Education, Mahe observed International Compost Awareness Week on 1st May 2025 at 10:45 AM with the objective of educating students about composting, reducing organic waste, and promoting sustainable waste management practices.

The programme began with a welcome address and a brief introduction highlighting the purpose of International Compost Awareness Week, celebrated globally to promote the benefits of composting for soil health, waste reduction, and environmental sustainability.

1. Awareness Session on Composting

A resource person delivered an informative session covering:

  • What composting is and how it works

  • Types of composting (aerobic, anaerobic, vermicomposting)

  • Benefits of composting for soil enrichment and waste reduction

  • Role of composting in promoting circular economy and sustainability

Students gained insight into how small composting practices can significantly reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills.

2. Demonstration of Compost Preparation

Students were given a hands-on demonstration on how to prepare compost using:

  • Kitchen waste (vegetable peels, fruit waste)

  • Garden waste (dry leaves, small branches)

  • Organic matter and soil layers

Students learned step-by-step techniques for setting up compost bins and maintaining proper moisture, aeration, and balance of green and brown materials.

3. Campus Compost Pit Maintenance

Participants helped in maintaining the existing compost pit on the campus by:

  • Adding segregated organic waste

  • Turning the compost mixture

  • Removing contaminants

  • Observing decomposition progress

This practical engagement helped students understand the real-life application of composting.

4. Poster and Slogan Display

Students created posters and slogans to spread compost awareness, including messages like:

  • “Don’t Waste Waste—Compost It!”

  • “Healthy Soil, Healthy Planet”

  • “Composting: Nature’s Recycling”

5. Reflection and Discussion

A group discussion was conducted where students shared their thoughts on implementing composting at home and in the community. Ideas were discussed for creating a compost-based school garden project.

The programme concluded with an appreciation message highlighting the importance of composting as a simple yet powerful tool for environmental protection.

The International Compost Awareness Week Programme was an enriching and impactful initiative, reflecting the Eco Club’s commitment to promoting sustainability, waste reduction, and hands-on environmental learning among students.
