The De-Addiction Club of MAHE Co-operative College of Teacher Education, Mahe conducted a Discussion Session on the Topic “Drug Abuse in Schools” on 25th April 2025 at 10:00 AM. The initiative aimed to create awareness among student-teachers about the increasing concern of drug use among school children and to equip them with knowledge and strategies for prevention and early intervention.

The programme began with a welcome address, followed by an introduction to the significance of addressing drug abuse at the school level. Participants were encouraged to understand the psychological, social, and environmental factors contributing to substance use among adolescents.

The discussion covered several important aspects, including:

  • Causes and triggers of drug abuse among school-aged children

  • Effects of peer pressure, academic stress, and family issues

  • Early behavioural signs that teachers should observe

  • Impact of drugs on physical health, mental well-being, and academic performance

  • Role of teachers in early identification and counselling

  • Implementation of awareness programmes and preventive measures in schools

  • Need for collaboration between teachers, parents, and community resources

Students actively contributed their views, shared relevant experiences, and engaged in meaningful dialogue. The interactive discussion helped participants gain deeper insights into the realities of drug-related challenges faced by schoolchildren.

Faculty coordinators highlighted the critical role of teachers as mentors and first-line observers who can detect early warning signs and provide support. Emphasis was placed on creating a safe, open, and trust-based school environment that encourages students to seek help.

The session concluded with a message encouraging student-teachers to be proactive in promoting drug-free school environments and to advocate healthy practices among children.

The Discussion on “Drug Abuse in Schools” was an informative and thought-provoking event, reinforcing the De-Addiction Club’s commitment to empowering future educators to effectively address substance abuse issues among young learners.
