WOMEN CELL INAUGURATION AND SEMINAR ON GENDER LAW

 


On November 16, 2024, the Women's Cell of Mahe Co-operative College of Teacher Education organized a seminar on the topic "Gender and Law. "The session was led by the renowned criminal lawyer Advocate P.T. Jaya, one of the leading advocates in Kerala. The seminar focused on the intersection of gender and the legal system, shedding light on societal challenges, personal experiences, and the empowerment of women in the legal



Advocate Jaya began the session by explaining the structure and functions of the Indian legal system. She described the hierarchy of courts, ranging from subordinate courts to the Supreme Court, and elaborated on their crucial role in ensuring justice and upholding constitutional principles.



The seminar provided a comprehensive discussion on several legal articles and laws designed to protect women's rights. Advocate Jaya highlighted key constitutional provisions that ensure equality and protection against discrimination. She also discussed important legislation, such as the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, and the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2013, emphasizing their significance in addressing gender-based issues. She detailed the barriers that hinder women from accessing justice. She also stressed how cultural and societal norms often discourage women from pursuing legal remedies, leaving them vulnerable and unsupported in their struggles.


Drawing from her own life and career, Advocate Jaya shared her inspiring journey of entering the legal profession during an era when it was predominantly male-dominated. Despite facing resistance from her family and societal pressures, she persevered with unwavering dedication,


eventually carving a powerful niche for herself in the field. Through specific case examples, she illustrated the challenges women face in the legal field and the importance of resilience and determination in overcoming


Advocate Jaya spoke passionately about empowering women to overcome the gender biases entrenched in the legal profession. She encouraged. aspiring women lawyers to pursue their ambitions with confidence, resilience, and a strong sense of purpose, emphasizing that the legal field holds immense potential for women to effect meaningful change in society.

The session concluded with a feedback session where participants, including Abhinand P.
