Demonstration Series – "Beyond the Blackboard" (Session 9)
Topic: "Exploring the Plant Cell"
The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of MAHE Co-operative College of Teacher Education, Mahe, organized the ninth session of its Demonstration Series – "Beyond the Blackboard" on 23 July 2026 at the College Auditorium. The series was designed to provide prospective teachers with opportunities to observe innovative classroom demonstrations delivered by alumni, thereby strengthening their pedagogical knowledge, instructional skills, and classroom practices.
The ninth session featured a demonstration on "Exploring the Plant Cell," presented by Ms. Nandana Vinod, an alumna of MCCTE from the 2024–2026 Batch. The programme commenced with a welcome address, followed by an introduction to the resource person. Dr. Sreelatha K, Principal, MCCTE, served as the General Co-ordinator and highlighted the significance of experiential and learner-centred approaches in science education.
During the demonstration, Ms. Nandana Vinod introduced the structure and functions of the plant cell through an engaging and activity-oriented teaching approach. She explained the various cell organelles, including the cell wall, cell membrane, nucleus, chloroplasts, vacuole, mitochondria, and cytoplasm, emphasizing their structure and specific functions. The concepts were presented systematically using visual aids, diagrams, models, and interactive discussions, enabling participants to develop a clear understanding of the topic.
The session effectively integrated multimedia resources, questioning techniques, collaborative learning activities, and concept-based instructional strategies to encourage active learner participation and critical thinking. The resource person demonstrated how complex biological concepts could be simplified through creative teaching-learning materials and learner-centred methodologies. Participants also observed effective classroom management, logical lesson organization, and formative assessment techniques that enhanced conceptual understanding and student engagement.
An interactive discussion and feedback session followed the demonstration, during which participants reflected on the instructional strategies employed and explored ways of implementing similar innovative practices in their future classrooms. The resource person addressed participants' questions and shared practical suggestions for making biology teaching more interactive, inquiry-based, and meaningful.
The participants appreciated the clarity of presentation, innovative teaching methods, and effective classroom interaction demonstrated during the session. The programme significantly contributed to strengthening the professional competencies of prospective teachers by exposing them to creative and experiential approaches to science teaching.
The programme was coordinated by Mr. Arun U, Assistant Professor and IQAC Co-ordinator, under the overall leadership of Dr. Sreelatha K, Principal, MCCTE. The ninth session of the "Beyond the Blackboard" demonstration series successfully reinforced the importance of innovative pedagogy and experiential learning in science education, inspiring future teachers to create engaging, concept-oriented, and learner-friendly classroom experiences.
