Demonstration Series – "Beyond the Blackboard" (Session 14)

The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of MAHE Co-operative College of Teacher Education, Mahe, organized the fourteenth session of its Demonstration Series – "Beyond the Blackboard" on 24 July 2026 at the College Auditorium. The demonstration series was initiated to provide prospective teachers with opportunities to observe innovative classroom practices and develop their pedagogical competencies through model teaching sessions presented by MCCTE alumni.
The fourteenth session featured a demonstration on "Directions," presented by Mr. Abhiram Murali K, an alumnus of MCCTE from the 2024–2026 Batch. The programme commenced with a welcome address, followed by an introduction to the resource person. Dr. Sreelatha K, Principal, MCCTE, served as the General Co-ordinator and emphasized the importance of activity-based and learner-centred approaches in teaching Social Science and Environmental Studies.
During the demonstration, Mr. Abhiram Murali K introduced the concept of cardinal and intermediate directions through an engaging and interactive teaching approach. He explained the use of the four cardinal directions—North, South, East, and West—as well as the intermediate directions, and demonstrated their practical applications in map reading, navigation, and everyday life. The concepts were presented using maps, directional charts, visual aids, and classroom activities, enabling participants to develop a clear understanding of spatial orientation.
The session effectively integrated innovative teaching-learning materials, collaborative learning activities, multimedia resources, and questioning techniques to encourage active participation and conceptual understanding. The resource person demonstrated how geographical concepts could be taught through experiential learning, real-life examples, and learner-centred instructional strategies. Participants also observed effective lesson planning, classroom communication, learner engagement, and formative assessment techniques that enhanced the overall teaching-learning process.
An interactive discussion and feedback session followed the demonstration, during which participants reflected on the pedagogical methods employed and discussed ways of incorporating similar innovative strategies into their future classroom practice. The resource person addressed participants' questions and shared practical suggestions for making geography lessons more engaging, activity-oriented, and meaningful.
The participants appreciated the systematic presentation, creative instructional techniques, and effective classroom interaction demonstrated during the session. The programme significantly contributed to strengthening the pedagogical competencies of prospective teachers by exposing them to innovative teaching practices that promote active learning and critical thinking.
The programme was coordinated by Mr. Arun U, Assistant Professor and IQAC Co-ordinator, under the overall leadership of Dr. Sreelatha K, Principal, MCCTE. The fourteenth session of the "Beyond the Blackboard" demonstration series successfully reinforced the importance of innovative, learner-centred pedagogy in geography education and inspired future teachers to adopt interactive and experiential teaching practices in their classrooms.
