Demonstration Series – "Beyond the Blackboard" (Session 6)
Topic: "Exploring Shapes: The World of Polygons"
The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of MAHE Co-operative College of Teacher Education, Mahe, organized the sixth session of its Demonstration Series – "Beyond the Blackboard" on 22 July 2026 at the College Auditorium. The series was designed to familiarize prospective teachers with innovative teaching methodologies and effective classroom practices through demonstration lessons conducted by distinguished alumni.
The sixth session featured a demonstration on "Exploring Shapes: The World of Polygons," presented by Mr. Gokuldas P, an alumnus of MCCTE from the 2023–2025 Batch. The programme commenced with a welcome address, followed by an introduction to the resource person. Dr. Sreelatha K, Principal, MCCTE, served as the General Co-ordinator and highlighted the significance of activity-based and learner-centred approaches in mathematics education.
During the demonstration, Mr. Gokuldas P introduced the concept of polygons through an engaging blend of visual representations, interactive discussions, and hands-on learning activities. He explained the characteristics, classification, and properties of various polygons, enabling participants to develop a clear conceptual understanding of geometric shapes. The session emphasized the use of real-life examples and practical illustrations to simplify abstract mathematical concepts and make learning more meaningful.
The demonstration incorporated innovative teaching-learning materials, digital resources, collaborative activities, and effective questioning techniques that encouraged active participation and critical thinking. The resource person showcased how geometry can be taught through exploration, observation, and problem-solving rather than rote memorization. Participants also observed effective classroom management, lesson sequencing, and assessment strategies that promoted learner engagement and conceptual clarity.
Following the demonstration, an interactive discussion and feedback session was conducted, during which participants reflected on the teaching strategies employed and explored ways of adapting similar methods in their future classrooms. The resource person addressed participants' queries and shared valuable insights on creating enjoyable and inclusive mathematics learning experiences.
The participants appreciated the clarity of presentation, innovative instructional methods, and practical classroom applications demonstrated during the session. The programme significantly contributed to strengthening the pedagogical skills of prospective teachers and encouraged them to adopt creative, activity-oriented approaches in mathematics teaching.
The programme was coordinated by Mr. Arun U, Assistant Professor and IQAC Co-ordinator, under the overall leadership of Dr. Sreelatha K, Principal, MCCTE. The sixth session of the "Beyond the Blackboard" demonstration series successfully enhanced participants' understanding of innovative mathematics pedagogy and reinforced the importance of experiential learning in developing effective classroom practices.
