Demonstration Series – "Beyond the Blackboard" (Session 4)
Topic: "Rutherford Atomic Model"
The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of MAHE Co-operative College of Teacher Education, Mahe, organized the fourth session of its Demonstration Series – "Beyond the Blackboard" on 21 July 2026 at the College Auditorium. The initiative was aimed at providing prospective teachers with opportunities to observe innovative teaching demonstrations and enhance their pedagogical skills through reflective classroom practices.
The fourth session featured a demonstration on "Rutherford Atomic Model", presented by Ms. Arunima S, an alumna of MCCTE from the 2024–2026 Batch. The programme commenced with a welcome address, followed by an introduction to the resource person. Dr. Sreelatha K, Principal, MCCTE, served as the General Co-ordinator and emphasized the importance of activity-oriented teaching and conceptual learning in science education.
During the demonstration, Ms. Arunima S effectively explained the Rutherford Atomic Model by integrating innovative teaching strategies, visual representations, and interactive classroom activities. She provided a clear explanation of Rutherford's Gold Foil Experiment, the discovery of the atomic nucleus, and the significance of the model in the development of modern atomic theory. The concepts were presented in a systematic and learner-friendly manner, enabling participants to understand abstract scientific ideas through practical illustrations and meaningful classroom interactions.
The session showcased the effective use of teaching-learning materials, questioning techniques, and multimedia resources to promote conceptual clarity and active learner participation. Participants observed how scientific principles could be taught through inquiry-based learning, collaborative discussions, and real-life analogies that stimulate curiosity and critical thinking. The demonstration also highlighted effective classroom management, lesson sequencing, and assessment strategies suitable for teaching Physical Science at the secondary level.
An interactive discussion followed the demonstration, during which participants reflected on the teaching methods employed and discussed ways of incorporating similar innovative practices into their own classrooms. The resource person responded to participants' questions and shared practical suggestions for making science teaching more engaging and concept-oriented.
The participants appreciated the well-structured presentation, creative instructional techniques, and effective classroom interaction demonstrated during the session. The programme significantly contributed to strengthening the pedagogical competencies of future teachers by exposing them to learner-centred and experiential teaching approaches.
The programme was coordinated by Mr. Arun U, Assistant Professor and IQAC Co-ordinator, under the overall leadership of Dr. Sreelatha K, Principal, MCCTE. The fourth session of the "Beyond the Blackboard" demonstration series successfully reinforced the importance of innovative instructional practices in science education and encouraged prospective teachers to adopt engaging and concept-based teaching methodologies in their professional practice.
