Report on Onam Celebration – ‘Thakiladi’

The Onam celebration at Mahe Co-operative College of Teacher Education was held on Friday, September 13, 2024, under the title ‘Thakiladi.’ The event was vibrant with traditional Onam festivities, marking the joyous occasion with a variety of cultural performances and games.


The programme commenced with a Pookalam, symbolizing the spirit of Onam. This was followed by mesmerizing performances, including Thiruvathira, a graceful group dance, Onappattu (Onam songs), and a lively group dance that enthralled the audience.






A special highlight of the celebration was the traditional Ona Sadya, a sumptuous feast prepared with delicious Kerala delicacies, adding to the festive ambiance.

In addition to cultural events, a range of traditional Onam games was organized, including:

Lemon and Spoon Race

Sundarikku Pottuthodal (Blindfold game)

Water Filling

Musical Chair

Uriyadi (Pot-breaking)

Vadam Vali (Tug of War)


The celebration was graced by the presence of Sri E. Valsarai, former Home Minister of Puducherry and Chairman of the college, who delivered a speech on the significance of Onam in fostering unity and cultural heritage. Sri Sajith Narayan, President of the college, also addressed the gathering, reflecting on the importance of Onam in Kerala’s history and traditions. Smt. Padmalekha VM, Assistant Professor, shared her insights into the relevance of the festival in modern times.


A remarkable moment of the day was the Mega Thiruvathira, performed by the students, which captivated everyone with its elegance and synchronized movements. Another highlight was the water-filling game that saw enthusiastic participation from both teaching and non-teaching staff, bringing out the fun and competitive spirit of the event.



The celebration concluded with the distribution of prizes to the winners of various competitions, adding a sense of accomplishment to the joyous occasion
