 INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR BIODIVERSITY CELEBRATION

The Eco Club of MAHE Co-operative College of Teacher Education, Mahe celebrated the International Day for Biodiversity on 20th May 2025 at 3:00 PM with the aim of increasing awareness about the importance of biodiversity and encouraging students to play an active role in its conservation.

The programme began with a welcome address, followed by an introduction explaining the theme and significance of the International Day for Biodiversity. Students were reminded of the essential role biodiversity plays in maintaining ecological balance, supporting human life, and sustaining ecosystems.

1. Awareness Session

A resource person delivered an impactful presentation covering:

  • Definition and importance of biodiversity

  • Threats to biodiversity such as habitat loss, pollution, overexploitation, and climate change

  • Importance of conserving local flora and fauna

  • Strategies for protecting biodiversity at community and global levels

The session helped students understand the urgent need to protect and restore biodiversity.

2. Campus Biodiversity Observation Walk

Students participated in a guided walk around the campus to observe:

  • Various plant species

  • Birds, insects, and small wildlife

  • Seasonal environmental patterns

  • Natural habitats and ecological interactions

Participants documented their observations through notes and photographs, enhancing their understanding of local biodiversity.

3. Poster and Slogan Display

Students created posters and slogans promoting biodiversity conservation, with messages such as:

  • “Protect Biodiversity, Protect the Future”

  • “Every Species Matters”

  • “Healthy Ecosystems = Healthy Planet”

These creative displays helped generate awareness across the campus.

4. Group Discussion on Biodiversity Protection

Students engaged in a meaningful discussion about ways to protect biodiversity. Suggestions included planting native species, reducing pollution, protecting natural habitats, and promoting community participation in conservation activities.

5. Biodiversity Pledge

Participants took a pledge to support biodiversity by:

  • Respecting natural habitats

  • Reducing environmental pollution

  • Promoting planting and conservation

  • Encouraging awareness among peers and communities

The programme concluded with remarks from the coordinators emphasizing that safeguarding biodiversity is essential for a sustainable future and that everyone must contribute to conservation efforts.

The International Day for Biodiversity Celebration was an insightful and inspiring event, highlighting the Eco Club’s commitment to promoting environmental consciousness, ecological protection, and a deeper understanding of the natural world among students.
