DEBATE COMPETITION – “NATURE VS NURTURE”
Organized by the Biological Science Club, MAHE Co-operative College of Teacher Education, Mahe
Date: 22 July 2024
Time: 2:00 PM
The Biological Science Club of MAHE Co-operative College of Teacher Education, Mahe conducted a Debate Competition on the topic “Nature vs Nurture” on 22nd July 2024 at 2:00 PM. The programme aimed to develop scientific thinking, enhance communication skills, and encourage students to analyze the influence of hereditary and environmental factors on human development.
The event began with an introduction to the theme, explaining the long-standing scientific discussion on whether genetics (nature) or environmental factors (nurture) play a more significant role in shaping behavior, personality, and abilities. Students were divided into two teams, each representing one side of the argument.
Participants presented well-researched points, supported by scientific theories, real-life examples, and biological principles. The team arguing for nature emphasized the role of genetics, hereditary traits, DNA, biological predispositions, and evolutionary influences. Meanwhile, the nurture team highlighted environmental impacts, learning experiences, cultural background, upbringing, and social interactions as key contributors to human development.
The debate was lively and engaging, with participants confidently presenting their arguments and responding to rebuttals. The exchange of ideas demonstrated students’ analytical skills, clarity of thought, and depth of understanding of the topic. The audience showed great interest and gained valuable insights into the complex interaction between biology and environment.
Faculty members judged the competition based on clarity, content accuracy, logical reasoning, confidence, and effectiveness in addressing counterarguments. They appreciated the participants for their preparation and thoughtful presentation of scientific perspectives.
The programme concluded with acknowledgment of the winning team and appreciation for all participants. The Debate on “Nature vs Nurture” was an intellectually stimulating and successful initiative, reflecting the Biological Science Club’s commitment to promoting scientific awareness, critical thinking, and academic excellence among students.
