VIJAY DIVAS

Vijay Diwas is celebrated on December 16 every year to commemorate India’s historic victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war, which led to the creation of Bangladesh. It is a day to remember the courage, sacrifice, and patriotism of the Indian Armed Forces.

On December 16, 1971, the Pakistan Army surrendered to Indian forces in Dhaka, marking the end of a 13-day war. This was one of the shortest and most decisive wars in history, with nearly 93,000 Pakistani soldiers surrendering — the largest military surrender since World War II. The leadership of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and General Sam Manekshaw played a crucial role in this victory.

To honor this momentous occasion, Mahe Cooperative College of Teacher Education organized a Vijay Diwas celebration on December 16, 2023. The event was hosted by the Social Science Association and featured a special talk by Hridyaraj. He spoke about the importance of remembering the brave soldiers who protected the nation's integrity and inspired students to be proud of India's military history.

The event included student participation, patriotic poems, and concluded with the national anthem. Vijay Diwas reminds us of the cost of freedom and the duty we have to uphold the values of unity, peace, and respect for those who serve the nation.
