INTERNATIONAL FRIENDSHIP DAY

Friendship Day was first proposed in 1930 by Joyce Hall, the founder of Hallmark Cards. The idea was further promoted by the greeting card American National Association, but was not taken in a healthy spirit as it reflected the commercial gimmick to promote the greeting cards in name of Friendship Day. The original date of celebration was 2 August, though it has since been moved to 7 August due to de-synchronisation in the United States.

The Idea of a Global Friendship Day was first proposed on 20 July 1958 by Dr.

Ramon Artemio Bracho during a dinner with friends in Puerto Pinasco, a town on the River Paraguay about 200 miles (320 km) north of Asuncion, Paraguay. During said meeting, the World Friendship Crusade was born. The World Friendship Crusade is a foundation that promotes friendship and fellowship among all human beings, regardless of race, colour or religion. Since then, 30 July has been fervently celebrated as Friendship Day in Paraguay every year and has also been adopted by several other countries.

To honour Friendship Day, in 1998, Nane Annan named Winnie the Pooh the world's Ambassador of Friendship at the United Nations. The event was co-sponsored by the U.N. Department of Public Information and Disney Enterprises, co-hosted by Kathy

Lee Gifford.

The World Friendship Crusade lobbied the United Nations for several years to recognize 30 July as World Friendship Day; Finally, in 2011, the General Assembly of the United Nations decided to designate 30 July as the International Day of Friendship and proceeded to invite all the Member States to observe the International Day of Friendship per the culture and customs of their local, national and regional communities, including through education and public awareness-raising activities.

On this day English option of Mahe Co-operative College of Teachers Education, Mahe celebrated the day with a talk on the day highlighting the significant features of the day and also about the importance of having friends in every ones life.

He signed laws that impose significantly tough punishments and lengthy prison sentences for the poaching, illegal trade, transportation or storage of tigers in Russia. The Amur Tiger Centre is an organization created by the Russian Geographical Society on the initiative of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin. The goal of the day is to promote a global system for protecting the natural habitats of tigers and to raise public awareness and support for tiger conservation issues. International Tiger Day has been shown to be effective in increasing online awareness on tigers through information search.

NATIONAL FLAG DAY

MAHE CO OPERATIVE COLLEGE OF TEACHER EDUCATION, MAHE

NATIONAL FLAG DAY

22 JULY 2025

The National Flag Day of India is a commemorative occasion that pays tribute to the Indian national flag, its journey, and the powerful values it inspires. In 2025, the focus is on fostering unity, educating the nation about the flag's rich heritage, and cherishing the ideals of freedom it represents. This day is deeply significant not just for its historical roots, but because of the pride and collective identity it fosters among all Indians.

The evolution of the Indian national flag is a narrative of innovation and aspiration.

Early flags emerged during the struggle against colonial rule, like the first unofficial flag hoisted in 1906 at Parsee Bagan, Kolkata and the overseas effort by Madame Bhikaji Cama in 1907.

The modern tricolor owes much to Pingali Venkayya, who designed successive prototypes culminating in the 1947 version. Saffron at the top, white in the center (with the Ashoka Chakra added on adoption), and green at the base, each have a meaning rooted in India's ethos.

22 July 1947 is the most important date for the Indian flag, as the tricolor was officially adopted by India's Constituent Assembly on this day. Just weeks before independence, this act formalized a symbol that had long unified freedom fighters, activists, and ordinary citizens alike.

The National Flag Day program was conducted by Mathematics Department.

Sreenanda P K conducted a quiz program for the students at the morning assembly on the behalf of National Flag Day. Every student participated well.

International Chess Day is annually celebrated on 20 July, the day the International Chess Federation (FIDE) was founded in 1924. International Chess Day is celebrated every year; the reason behind its celebration is to commemorate the formation of FIDE, the globally recognized governing body of chess. Last year marked a historic milestone – FIDE’s centennial anniversary, which celebrated a century of chess while laying the foundation for the next hundred years. Among the key legacies of that celebration is FIDE’s renewed commitment to long-term goals: from global expansion and accessibility to deepening chess’s social impact.

This year, FIDE launched the Year of Social Chess, an initiative dedicated to using the game as a tool for inclusion, education, empowerment, and mental well-being. The theme for International Chess Day 2025, “Every Move Counts”, reminds us that, on the board and in life, every decision shapes our journey.
