The Guidance and Counselling Club of Mahe Co-operative College of Teacher Education, Mahe, conducted a Peer Counselling Training session on 5 October 2023 at 2:00 PM. The programme was organised with the objective of equipping students with essential counselling skills that would enable them to support their peers effectively within the academic and personal environment.
The session began with a warm welcome by the club coordinator, who highlighted the importance of peer counselling in promoting emotional well-being and fostering a supportive campus atmosphere. The resource person for the training introduced the concept of peer counselling and discussed its relevance in addressing common student concerns such as stress, anxiety, academic pressure, and interpersonal conflicts.
During the training, students were familiarised with key counselling skills including active listening, empathy, confidentiality, problem-solving, and providing non-judgmental support. Interactive activities, role-plays, and group discussions helped participants practise these skills in a practical manner. The session also emphasised the boundaries of peer counselling and the importance of referring cases to professional counsellors when necessary.
The participants actively engaged in the training, expressing their willingness to apply the learned strategies in real-life situations. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks, acknowledging the resource person, faculty members, and students for their active participation and contribution to the success of the training.
